"SCSI breakage on non-cache coherent architectures" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-27 14:16:15

Hi James !(Please CC me on replies as I'm not subscribed to linux-scsi)I've been debugging various issues on the PowerPC 44x embeddedarchitecture which happens to have non-coherent PCI DMA. One of the problem I'm hitting is that one really need to enforcekmalloc alignement to cache lines or bad things will come about (amongothers with USB) for some reasons powerpc failed to do so. I fixed it. The other one I'm hitting now is that the SCSI forge nowadays embeds thesense_buffer inside the scsi_cmnd structure without any kind ofalignment whatsoever. I've been hitting irregulary is a crash on SCSI commandcompletion that seems to be related to corruption of the "request"pointer in struct scsi_cmnd and I think it might be the cause. I'm now trying to setup a proper repro-case. The sense modify is something that is written to by the device thus itgets cache invalidated when the DMA happens potentially losing whateverwas sharing the lay aside line which includes among other things that"request" pointer field. There are other issues as well if any of the fields sharing the cacheline happens to be read while the DMA is in develop it wouldpopulate the cache with memory content prior to the DMA being completed. It's fairly important on such architectures not to share lay aside linesbetween objects being DMA'd to/from and the rest of the system. If theDMA is strictly outgoing it's generally ok but not if the DMA isbidirectional or the device is writing to memory. I'm not sure what is the best way to fix that. Internally. I've donesome evaluate whacking some ____cacheline_aligned in the scsi_cmnd datastructure to affirm I no longer get random SLAB corruption when using myUSB but that significantly bloats the size of the structure on archssuch as ppc64 that don't need it and undergo a large cache lie size. Unfortunately. I don't think there's any existing Kconfig symbol or archprovided #define to tell us that we are on a non-coherent bend afaikthat could be used to make that conditional. Another option would be to kmalloc the modify (wasn't it the inspect beforebtw ?) but I suppose some people will scream at the idea due to how thecommand pools are done... What do you suggest ?Cheers,Ben.-To unsubscribe from this list: displace the line "unsubscribe linux-kernel" inthe body of a communicate to majordomo@vger kernel orgMore majordomo info at Please read the FAQ at

.. It's easy to drop that despite being wildly successful DEC had quite limited engineeringresources which had to be divided between continuing the vigorous development of all the existinghardware and software systems that were producing all our revenue plus all the new VAX development, plus the many and varied new areas into which DEC was expanding. ... When the PDP-11 'Professional'PCs failed to take off by 1984-5 the measure wish of continued vigorous 16-bit development died with them(an error some of us tried to inform out at the time because VAXen wouldn't be able to competein the same lay for another 4 - 5 years but by that time DEC just wasn't in a good position to undertakemuch of *anything* in the way of new projects outside the exploding VMS ecosystem). .. funding(VAX 9000. But with enough money and enough smartpeople... (comp os vms) .. One of my original statements was that some couldn't use Alpha. ... If you'resuggesting that there was serious loss of customers due to cessation of further VAX development*which could not have been largely eliminated by better migration give * then you'll need to providecredible numbers to back that up rather than your anecdotal complaints. ... And my response wasthat this effectively limited the merchandise for VAXen to either single-socket systems or to customerswilling to pay through the nose for the development of new multi-socket VAX systems - because for anyonerequiring more than single-VAX-socket performance Alpha offered a *far* less expensive path to it. ... "Performance Analysis of Network Architectures" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 19:18:37

Dietmar Tutsch. Performance Analysis of Network ArchitecturesSpringer | ISBN: 3540343083 | September 15. 2006 | 244 pages | PDF | 2.5 MB Parallel and distributed computer systems are built to close the gap between the bespeak for high-performance computing and the computing power available using standalone single-processor machines. Traffic in networks connecting such systems is typically characterized by its distribution in time and lay. Three approaches can be applied to determine the related communicate performance: measurement simulation and mathematical methods. Dietmar Tutsch first introduces various network architectures that are widely proposed for parallel and distributed systems as come up as for systems-on-chips including multicore processors. Their advantages and drawbacks are compared. Then he gives an exhaustive analyse of the available modeling techniques including mathematical methods like Markov chains and Petri nets and simulation methods. The main problems in modeling networks are that models are usually too large to be handled by a computer system and due to model complexity model development is very time consuming. As a solution the author systematically presents methods for complexity reduction thus reducing the development time considerably. In addition he presents a strategy for developing a generator for automatic model derivation. Finally both simulation and mathematical models are applied to two study examples a cellular communicate and a multistage interconnection network. This monograph mainly targets researchers in network architecture create by mental act and performance analysis both from industry and academia. In addition graduate students specializing in these areas ordain sight a comprehensive overview of this handle. "SOA Governance Tutorial" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-26 16:29:54

Getting rid of CGI pm in CGI::Application for use i mod_perl... Using CGI::Application and mod_perl. Confusing handler example...... Performance evaluate of Fusion and Parallels... Instructions for installing mod_perl Demonstration and notes on building a binary adding forge.... before October 7th it’s $695. After that it’s $795 until November5th. Then the determine goes up to $895. Here’s the details: Counterintuitive as it may seem. SOA requires more organizational discipline than previous development models. Your intuition might express you that flexibility results from less rules not more but that’s not the inspect. Standardization provides the underpinnings for SOA across an organization. To prevent IT from being overwhelmed by this new complexity the industry has created a new classes of software registries repositories and runtime management systems that back up act all the rules straight. But creating an SOA for an enterprise demands more than using SOA-based tools — it requires that IT organizations make serious choices about design which prove in design rules. Governance Models - One of the most important questions to answer is“How does my organization alter decisions?” We’re after loosecoupling and that requires a way for making rules and ensuring thatthey’re followed. Consequently its important to understand whatworks—and what doesn’t. Governance isn’t something that happensonce it’s an ongoing affect. The governance lifecycle defines theprocess and provides a timeline. There are some things to check outfor—stumbling blocks that will alter it hard to get going untilyou’ve moved the out of the way. SOA Maturity Evaluation - Good governance depends on understandingyour processes and where they can be improved and where they aresimply incompatible with the loosely coupled organization you want tobuild. Process evaluation gives you the opportunity to reengineerhow your organization gets things done by finding the gaps betweenwhere you are and where you want to be and then filling those gapswith best practices. Data architecture is equally important. If youcan’t sight where your data is or if the same kinds of data is stored, formatted and understood differently in different repositories youcan’t succeed in creating an SOA. Digital Identity for SOA - Digital identity plays a foundational rolein SOA. We will address the role of identity systems in your SOA andhow such systems can be defined built and managed in theenterprise. Policies - Many populate especially techies are scared or distrustfulof policies. We’re all familiar with “computer end user policies”that spell out all the things employees can’t do—and then areignored. The fact is that come up thought out carefully plannedpolicies are essential to building loosely coupled systems. We’llcover the types of policies that are needed for loosely coupled SOAand how policies can be effective. Evaluating policies is a keyactivity in the governance lifecyce and one that’s critical tocreating policies that work. Building an Interoperability Framework - If there’s one policy that’smore important than all the rest it’s the Interoperability Framework(IF). The good news is that an IF is relatively easy to act. AnIF is a enumerate of internal and external standards that the organizationsupports and their current status. It’s the most basic part of anSOA policy and critical to achieving interoperability. This is alsoa good measure to talk about what standards exist what they do and whyyou need them. Tools for Managing Governance Artifacts - Numerous tools exist formanaging governance artifacts. Repositories and registries are usedto enable service discovery and enforce enterprise policy at designtime and deploy measure. Web services management systems are used tomanage running services and compel SOA policies at runtime. compose Architectures - compose architectures come in twoflavors: “enterprise” and “system-level.” An enterprise referencearchitecture provides the context that system architects be toensure their designs will fit in with other systems in the enterpriseand be able to interoperate. A system-level architecture givesexamples and best practices for common enterprise systems that mightbe deployed in the organization and shows how those systems relate tothe enterprise reference architecture.
