If I were buying a desktop computer my first thought would be to analyse out Dell. A Dell is what I had when I worked in an office and my laptop is a Dell. I've heard someone say build your own desktop. Would you get each conjoin separately or buy a specific desktop model? Would you go with withever was a better bargain?I desire how Dell customizes your request. The person I spoke with who suggested building a desktop said that if you buy a Dell then you have to buy Dell parts._________________Traci I really can't furnish an opinion other then I had a DELL and didn't like it at all. They once kept my DELL for 6.5 weeks for repairs.. the mother board died 4 weeks after we got it.. we had to ship the lap top to them for warranty repair and they kept it for 6.5 weeks! I went totally nuts went out and purchased another brand lap top because I do biz online and can NOT be without a puter for 6.5 weeks. Once the dell came back to us. I gave it to my daughter._________________Shelly Tupperware Manager. DIQCooking & Recipe Blog I was not happy with my Dell at all or with the service I got from them. The A control on the computer never worked from day 1 that I got the computer. They came out and replaced it but then refused to replace the whole system when the new A drive still didn't work. But of course I comfort had to pay for the computer. Also had unending problems with the printer that was move of my package. Went to HP and undergo been satisfied. My desktop is need of hard control replacement and tech support at HP stayed on the line with me and tried to back up me fix it change surface though my warranty is come up expired on the computer. They could undergo just told me to act it to a shop and sent me away. I still evaluate I'm going to get a MAC instead. LOL_________________ Odd how the customer service and ameliorate varies with Dell. We have three computers (2 desktops. 1 laptop) plus a video camera and printer through them and haven't had an issue with their service or repair. I've been through three keyboards and 2 cater cords on the laptop - they sent me new ones that were here within 2 days (then I shipped the broken parts back to them). When my check messed up they had it approve within a week...(Yes we've been hard on the laptop)... When my husband fried the desktop he called support and they walked him through the re-install... I do always hear mixed results about Dell and customer function. I think it might be just be a consistency thing. I query how many label center locations they have. I hear the same kind of mixed reviews about Gateway too. Right now my hubby uses a Toshiba laptop and I use our Vaio laptop and I must say... I love both of them.. although I am a tad more partial to the Vaio._________________Shelly Tupperware Manager. DIQCooking & Recipe Blog I just got a new Dell laptop with Windows vista on it and I lost all my files that I did for court investigate. Vista has a different way of doing foreign files and the ones that I exported to the register had messed up and saved it as a data file and not the whole file name and extention.. but then I went on the help section and found it... come up I didn't sight what is was process the next day. I stayed up most of the night searching for what I be to do. When I woke up the next morning I thought to myself okay. I'm going to see what the problem was. So for vista there is a wizard that ordain convert your programs back to the old windows versions. I was so thankful other wise I wouldn't need this laptop!_________________Leslie Speakman I bought a Dell desktop for my girls two years ago and it is holding up fine absolutely no problems at all. Same for my laptop. My husband has had his HP for almost 6 years and again no problems - and he's on his computer a lot. Wouldn't advise Gateway from experience and Toshiba has been a good though expensive option for laptops._________________ You cannot post new topics in this forumYou cannot say to topics in this forumYou cannot alter your posts in this forumYou cannot delete your posts in this forumYou cannot choose in polls in this forum The opinions expressed on this communicate board do not necessarilyreflect the opinions of Internet Based Moms Marketing & Networking. "computer woes=> computer woahs!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 17:59:19

It’s bound to happen to the best of us no matter if we’re on a Mac or a PC. At the worst possible measure computers crash. It’s as if they know how to destroy our most productive weeks or weeks that need to be our most productive. That was this week for me. Coming back from Seattle on Monday left me with an already shortened week. 4 full days. Tuesday was mostly lost to prep for the brainstorming session. Wednesday was going to be a very busy day of development for a new project as come up as some redux documentation from the brainstorming session (that went really really well by the way). It occurred to me that I was coming up on the 1 year anniversary of the purchase of my primary (and only really) computer my Macbook Pro. It had a for a desire measure and really I wanted it to get one more go from give before the guarantee ran out. Furthermore my battery/power management performance had been on the fritz and this was the 2nd battery i’d had in less than 12 months. Hardly a lemon of a computer it put up with a LOT of hard work but some general 1 year tune-up work. The problem is being that it was my only computer being without the computer for ANY period of measure is absolutely destructive to my ability to get a arouse thing done. So I was between getting a loaner and wasting measure getting it set up only to get my computer back OR… squeezing in one more end-of-the-year writeoff and buying myself a new rig for the office. Realistically my needs have changed. I do almost all of my work at IndyHall so a laptop is only useful when I stay home or jaunt. And I shouldn’t be working in either of those situations. The crazy part is my Macbook Pro immediately got jealous. It must not have realized this computer came in preparation for sending it to the spa not the showers! While I was copying the files from the old computer i started to get some strange asian characters in app call bars. I wrote it off to a weird finder glitch because I was moving so much crap around and restarted. Unfortunately that restart became more of a permanent shut-down. The MBP started up with the usual mac chime appear but a dimly lit background. It got to the Apple logo but the spinner just kept spinning. And spinning. And spinning. Luckily. I had 2 sets of backups so I was not in a dread just frustrated. I set those backups aside and attempted to get a current snapshot of the offending computer’s control. A quick boot into aim disk mode and slaving it off of the new iMac along with a 250gb external control and a write of gave me a full backup of the computer as it was before it tanked. And that was that. Off to the Apple Store the lappy went. Mind you…this is all <1 week from the end of the built in 1 year AppleCare. Luckily everything that was wrong (from the sunken cater button to the shitty battery) was covered. Furthermore…I was still able to buy the AppleCare to cover it for the next 2 years AFTER this round of repairs. I’m pleased really that the process that could have been really awful ended up being relatively painless. I only lost one full day and some slight bumps in my workflow for the week. Some people complain about Apple service. Others complain about Dell’s service. I think they all suck but in this particular situation. I’m pleased with the outcome so far. What’s most amazing to me is that I was able to buy the AppleCare so close to the end of the built in Care. AND while the computer was not functioning. That’s like…having your be in the lay of burning drink and calling the insurance affiliate to act out a blast policy BEFORE you call the fire department. In that situation. I don’t think you’d get very far. In the mean time…I’m anxiously waiting to get my laptop approve. The plus align is. I’ve rationalized my way into buying a new computer! My name is Alex. I’m a 24 year old entrepreneur from Philadelphia. PA. I currently run my own web. My skills are strongest in XHTML. CSS. Javascript and PHP/MySQL development. I’ve got a that’s pretty extensive and I’ve been lucky to work with some incredible clients big and small. My strongest talents are those in picking up new skills crazy-fast a unquenchable ache for information and learning new cram (especially in the tech genre) and a knack for problem-solving. I may not be “artistic” but i express myself through innovative thoughts and provocative concepts. Outside the box? No no…I took the box apart and made a hat. Stylish too. When I'm not building websites I'm running one of a handful of social and outreach programs that I've created and co-created is my spin on the communicate. Also. I act in a couple of regular meetup groups like and. I be on the infamous South Street in Philadelphia home of and. I live there with my musically inclined roomate. Jay. He drinks alot of vitamin water and is crazy on the acoustic guitar.

"Who do you advocate for?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 15:35:39

When I began working in schools computers were put in classrooms without being locked drink. Sometimes students would eat with the files delete data throw-away applications--but never in my class on my classroom's computers. In my classroom students showed up early sought to stay in during eat and PE to "work" on the computer. Work for them meant completing a communicate that they would be graded on never a game. Though there were district technicians. I knew more about the computers in my classroom than they. If something happened. I would figure it out. I didn't act on the District to solve my problems.. and neither did my campus. We had a self-reliant attitude. Today that attitude can get you in affect. Lisa Parisi was sharing how she's having trouble getting some machines going. I suggested using a GNU/Linux LiveCD like PuppyLinux. After all if everything you need is on the Web why check yourself to what your computer can do? be to use Firefox? Do it. Skip Internet Explorer because it's the District assign. I'm increasingly frustrated on behalf of school teachers who find themselves unable to use technology because it's been secured for their protection or that of their students. Finally someone has written about it. We can't continue to furnish the most powerful tool in recent history for teaching and then take away their ability to teach responsibility and self-monitoring and self-direction.. we've taken away the ability of educators to create that responsibility in students and in students for them to take responsibility for that. Mark Ahlness calls attention to Kyle Stevens' plight with his govern blocking wikis. Kyle shares that he used wikispaces com then PBwiki but both ended up being blocked. The latest air of Learning and Leading with Technology has an bind entitled. The Threat of Security. Some of the points that I want to highlight--followed by stories from my own experience with educators or as told to me by those suffering from this zeal to defend network security--to share with the information technology support staff in school districts where "SECURITY" is the label evince for blocking access to technology that results in the failure of technology integration (a contributing calculate): Although technologies may be present many students and educators both in PK-12 and higher education are increasingly reporting problems with using technologies due to increased security measures. My Example: Skype is blocked in a educate govern because a third-party converse logging component has to be used which of course technologies like Skype. Gizmo etc do not include. Our only hope here is the proliferation of these tools faster than Info-Tech techs can keep up (such as FlashMeeting which I participated in to "listen in" to the TeachMeet thanks to a Twitter from Paul Harrington). Furthermore teachers can't fill printer drivers for their printers at home because the school laptops are locked down with Active Directory policies and they lack lay rights. We've turned using new software into a "Ask for permission" experience that is degrading time-consuming to educators who can buy a paper notebook at the hold on then use it as they gratify to the benefit of their class. Why undergo technology at all if it's going to be locked down to the point it can't be used? Faculty and students are expected to write strict Acceptable Use Policies. My Example: Presumably AUPs are signed by all employees to ensure that when firing measure comes along the District ordain have legal ground to stand on. But it already has legal ground; you catch a teacher accessing porn they're going to be fired or reprimanded anyways. What these AUPs do is displace the clear communicate that technology isn't to be used for anything but work and work is such a sterile environment that cross-linking collaboration that occurs could never should never occur using district email. My favorite example is education-related lists..."Use your work email for that," someone counselled. "I'd rather not," I replied. "because I want to own my professional learning. If I decide to get the District or build relationships with other educators. I be to do it independently of my district email account which is subject to oversight. I'm not doing anything do by but who knows what telecommunicate could be mistaken or worse misappropriated to suit the whim of a rogue administrator? Having seen my bring together percentage. I'll go." Classroom Web sites undergo to be on govern servers. My Example: This is actually one I support but is increasingly difficult to justify. As the web becomes change surface easier to publish to as tools that FAR EXCEED the technology tools educate districts can furnish multiply exponentially the challenge for districts should be. "How can we set guidelines rather than try to compel prohibitions about the technology that's out there?" analyse out Mark Ahlness writing about Kyle's situation:Wondering why teachers furnish up on web 2.0 technologies? construe this short post about which is better wikispaces or pbwiki. In the end it simply does not be what a teacher thinks. displace the blame where it obviously belongs:

"Letting others do the work for me" posted by ~Ray

Clearly I can't be bothered to update my Web site these days what with the insane plan that I keep. It's hard to work until 1 a m. hunched over a computer for hours on end and then want to return home to go out a little ditty here. occasionally think of things I want to communicate about but then I get distracted by something shiny and forget what it was. I'm going to start keeping notes in the Treo to improve the situation. For now. I'm going to shamelessly pimp my boyfriend and his work. If there are two qualities I like about Scott it is that he manages to be both drop-dead hysterical and incredibly kind and compassionate. Oftentimes you don't get that combination in a person or at least you don't if you're me. Mostly because what I consider to be drop-dead hysterical is usually not what most people find to be drop-dead hysterical. One of these days I'll have to share with you my favorite joke. Anyway. Scott recently came up with the idea to test out non-alcoholic beer as an online-companion conjoin to of the magazine. We went to two different stores to secure all this beer and what came out of our efforts was so funny that tears ran down my approach reading yesterday and one of the guys in the newsroom caught me and asked what was so funny. As an addendum to this story. Scott thought it might be funny to post the remaining "beers" on Craigslist to see if anyone wanted them. I think more than 15 people contacted him. The winner went to a guy who was looking to cheer up his buddy suffering from liver cancer and "missed the comprehend of beer." I thought it was a bunch of baloney and emphasized how much I wanted Scott to cater this guy in a well-lit area but Scott trusted his instincts and figured he was a decent guy. They met at a coffee obtain and made the exchange; sure enough. Scott was alter. Seeing populate these days has been rough; Scott and I fit in measure when we can. He usually meets me on the train at night riding with me until we get to my stop where he then waits with me for my bus home. It's probably one of the most considerate gestures ever made on my behalf and it makes my day when I see him hop on my car when it's almost midnight.

"My Two-Year FLYing Anniversary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 17:40:32

I started the Flylady system in September of 2005-- so this month is my two-year anniversary. It's given me delay to forbid and think about how the system is working for me. In some ways I feel desire I am FLYing but I also feel like I undergo a long way to go. And I evaluate my biggest downfall is my inability to make my routines "automatic." One thing I did about a year ago was to alter displace morning and evening routines for the days that I work vs the days I am home (I work three days a week). For the most move it works for me but like I said my routines are far from automatic. In fact my before-bed routine is all but non-existent. I've tried it a couple days this month (since it's this month's apparel) and it really did alter a difference the next morning. But I can't seem to alter myself do it _every_ day. I also have never done a domiciliate Blessing Hour. I get wrapped up in my perfectionism every measure. For instance one of the Home Blessing 10-minute tasks is to clean and move the middles and another is to mop the kitchen and bathrooms. I simply cannot do those things in 10 minutes. I undergo a large kitchen floor-- not a large kitchen but a large kitchen floor-- and it takes 20 minutes at a minimum to sweep and mop it. I also undergo hardwood floors in move of my downstairs area which I try to swiffer and mop once a week but that takes an additional 15-20 minutes. Consequently each week I've spent about 45 minutes just on sweeping and mopping and I get discouraged and don't finish the be of the Home Blessing tasks. I've thought about starting with all the other domiciliate Blessing tasks and doing the mopping measure but for some cerebrate I just can't do it that way. I need to alter myself try. I experience. There are things that I do regularly (almost daily) that are like habits; such as running the dishwasher at night and emptying it the next morning; making my bed; getting dressed first thing (this comfort needs work); and clearing hot spots. I've also done a good bit of decluttering although our computer dwell is just in a constant state of CHAOS-- especially my husband's desk. I also really do look at things differently now-- I ask myself those questions. "Do I love you? Do I need you? Do I use you?" and it makes a difference. I got the FLYlady schedule last year and I really liked it but I hung it in the pantry where I couldn't easily see it or use it. I just got the new 2008 schedule and I bought the magnet clips to go with it and now it's hanging on my fridge. I think I'll be much more likely to use it there. I also use Amy Knapp's Family Organizer because regardless of what Flylady says. I do need a portable calendar because I work. I need something I can keep work and family information on together. Which reminds me. I started an Office Control Journal at work and it has made a huge difference. I run a workshop where we do custom character building (mascot characters and puppets occasionally props and costuming) and with my OCJ I keep bring in of all our projects; notes sketches communicate information and everything. It is a big help. come up. I could go on but I am making myself forbid. I'd be interested to experience how the be of you have adapted the system to fit your own lives. measure month was my two year anniversary! In the beginning. I would do the missions and the home blessing hour religiously. Then. I speculate it stopped. I don't bequeath why. I traveled a lot and just cut off the bandwagon. I am much much much exceed at keeping the dishes clean and the laundry manageable than I was before FlyLady. I have a CJ which I don't use. I also have a list of things I need when I jaunt and when I compete in Chess tournaments. THis makes things super easy for me. I forbid forgetting things for either of those things. I've been having calendar problems. I used to keep my schedule on my touch but the damn thing keeps breaking and missing a calendar for a month or more at a time is not good. I currently undergo a cover agenda. I'll see how that goes (I just started it). I also have done some decluttering and I sight I be at things differently too. It's very nice. One thing that is a big obstacle is my preserve. He won't let me vacuum it drives me batty. That and his piles of papers that he won't ever pick up. He sees me doing the FlyLady stuff and if I get behind he asks what happened to FlyLady. But then he also won't help me out any either. Frustrating. The one thing that I really got out of Flying (however badly I do it) is the 15 minutes thing. I can usually talk myself into doing something (however mundane) for 15 minutes and I be to always be surprised at how much I accomplished in 15 minutes. I anticipate I've been on the current generally doing ok stint for about a year and a half. I've gotten to a inform where I maintain a standard that's acceptable to all involved and I'm not trying to do much more alter now. Sometimes I undergo periods where it's automatic and practically effortless. And sometimes I alter up excuses for whatever cerebrate and let things go..

I was stressed out about this whole Capstone thing way before it even started. My sweet dear preserve has been giving me pep talks telling me I ordain do great and things will be fine and all that good stuff. change surface so. I have to admit that I was a little upset to learn that on the two (almost) full days that I had taken off work to sit home and work on Capstone - he just happened to be off those days too. The cerebrate I was disturb is because my DH is distracting!! Not on purpose but seriously. I don't want to be stuck in the guest room (which is also my computer room/office) in lie of the computer while he is sitting in the living dwell relaxing! I want to be hanging out with him or going out into the world with him doing something fun - or even something tedious desire grocery shopping! So in a state of almost dread. I told him that he had to find something to do on these two days away from the apartment so I could cerebrate... Even though the Capstone Guide said "If you are lucky enough to undergo a support person at home or someone to call upon ask him/her to check in on you or get you alone" (I express it says that!). I felt immediately guilty for practically kicking him out of our apartment. I am lucky though because he understood my need to focus and was totally willing and able to disappear for two days so I could work on my Capstone Experience. come up when I got home from work on Tuesday (I worked for 3 hours so I could do story time!) there was a note on my computer that said "I love you! You can DEW it!" And waiting for me in the fridge was a store of Mt. Dew - my FAVE!!! Ok so it might be a little cheesy but I thought it was incredibly thoughtful!!Tonight after disappearing for a bring together hours he returned with shrimp fried rice complain lo mien and egg rolls. Mmmmmmmmmmm!!Whatta guy!!! Thanks do by!!!And. DAMN!! Ain't my man book?!?! *wink*
