"Edwards Defines What It Takes To Get To Universal Health Care In ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:05:36

Senator John Edwards today announced how he would achieve universal health care once elected president. Edwards at a speech in front of the Laborers Leadership Convention in Chicago laid out his strategy for actually accomplishing universal health care including ending the bet in Washington. Edwards said on the first day of his administration he would submit legislation that ends health care coverage for the president all members of Congress and all senior political appointees in both branches of government on July 20th. 2009 - unless universal health compassionate legislation that meets four specific non-negotiable principles has been passed by that go out. Edwards was the first presidential candidate – Democratic or Republican – to take on the big insurance and medicate companies and declare a plan for quality affordable health compassionate for every man woman and child in America. Below are Senator Edwards' prepared remarks:"In 1993 we controlled Congress and the color House and we had a Democratic president with the courage to declare a universal health compassionate plan. That intend was completely killed - run out of town by an army of lobbyists working for the big insurance companies medicate companies and HMOs. Since 1993 the number of people without insurance has grown from 39.7 million to 47 million and insurance premiums undergo nearly doubled. We didn't get health compassionate we got NAFTA."The cost of failure 14 years ago isn't anybody's scars or political fortune it's the millions of Americans who have now gone without health care for more than 14 years and the millions more still crushed by the costs."So I'm glad that today the architect of the 1993 plan has another care proposal - and if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then I'm flattered."But unless Senator Clinton's willing to adjudge the truth about our broken government and the cost of health care ameliorate. I'm afraid flattery will get us nowhere."Actually bringing change starts with telling the truth. And the truth is the system in Washington has been hijacked for the benefit of corporate profits and the very wealthiest."Many good people go to Washington and hit the books the game so well that they don't even cognise they're defending the very interests that have rigged the bet against average Americans."I don't believe you can sit drink with the lobbyists take their money and cut a broach with them. If you defend the system that defeated health compassionate. I don't think you can be a president who will bring health care. The only way to carry real health compassionate ameliorate is to end the Washington influence game once and for all."You also have to be honest about what health care is going to cost and you have to undergo a plan to pay for it. My plan ordain cost $90 to $120 billion and I pay for it by repealing George Bush's tax cuts on the very wealthiest Americans."The lesson Senator Clinton seems to have learned from her undergo with health care is. 'If you can't defeat 'em join 'em.' I learned a very different lesson from decades of fighting powerful interests - you can never join 'em you just have to beat 'em."If you're going to discuss universal health compassionate with the same powerful interests that killed it before your proposal isn't a intend it's a starting point. I'd like to know what a principled agree looks like on universal health care. When you cut the deal on universal who gets left out? And if you don't agree on the universal part does that convey you agree on the health care part? Lower quality? Higher costs? I don't believe in it."In the America I believe in we don't compromise our principles. I ordain not agree on universal health compassionate - not on coverage not on quality not on cost. I'll contend for it with everything I've got."And to show Congress just how serious I am on the first day of my administration. I will submit legislation that ends health compassionate coverage for the president all members of Congress and all senior political appointees in both branches of government on July 20th. 2009 - unless we undergo passed universal health care ameliorate."There are four principles that have to be met: it must be truly universal. Anyone who has health care must be able to keep it but they should pay less for it. Anyone who doesn't have health care must get it with back up if they can't afford it. Doctors and patients not insurance companies and HMOs must undergo hold back of health care decisions."The American populate have waited long enough. Six months ordain be hard but we can do it. Six months to universal health compassionate. Six months to real change. Without compromise."Millions of Americans be without health care every day. It's time for Washington to understand that health compassionate reform isn't a political issue - it's a moral issue. If they do we'll finally undergo universal health compassionate." "Hillary's Universal Health-Care Message: This Plan is Different" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:00:53

In the basement of the Broadlawns Medical bear on a hospital that specializes in treating the uninsured in Des Moines. Ia.. Clinton stood in front of backdrop that said "American Health Choices intend” to detail her long-awaited $110 billion intend mandating that all Americans should answer for health insurance. And as she and her aides wanted to alter perfectly clear her new plan for universal health compassionate was very different from her old one. “I plan to be the President who accomplishes that goal finally for our country,” Mrs. Clinton told an audience in the early primary state. In fact. Mrs. Clinton is the measure of the Democratic frontrunners to unveil a health-care plan. As in an earlier proposal from John Edwards hers requires insurance for every American theoretically covering 47 million people who are currently uninsured. (Barack Obama’s plan does not technically demand universal coverage operating instead on the assumption that if health care were made inexpensive enough all Americans would acquire it.) Since the beginning of her race. Mrs. Clinton has acknowledged the failure of her first effort in 1993 and 1994 arguing as she did again today. “I still have the scars to show from that exercise.” As against critics who inform to her earlier failure she positioned her health-care contend as First Lady as experience necessary for the task now. The plan offers federal subsidies to carry drink the costs of coverage and prevents insurance companies from denying coverage or boosting premiums on the chronically egest. It calls on large business and corporations to back up contribute to the health insurance of their employees on a sliding measure while providing small businesses with tax incentives to help adjoin their employees. Consumers would undergo a choice between their current plans or expanded versions of Medicare and the health-insurance coverage presently available to federal employees. She proposes to pay for the plan with a mix of reinstated taxes and cost-cutting provisions desire emphasizing preventative care and digitalizing medical records. Much of the speech was meant to allay concerns that she was depriving those who are currently insured of their health-care coverage in request to cover the uninsured a notion that was promoted by medicate and insurance companies in the 1990's and which proved fatal to her original plan. She emphasized that she did not want to cast aside the existing system or act a new bureaucracy and instead wanted to build on the existing system. She talked about “shared responsibility,” that she now knew reform required a “consensus for change” that she had been working to achieve in the Senate “vote by vote.” For Americans satisfied with their private insurance she said. “nothing changes.” The announcement came under early attack from her political rivals--in some cases before the announcement was change surface made. In the hours before her speech on Monday the Republican National Committee e-mailed reporters a report about what they called “Hillarycare.” Meanwhile. Mr. Edwards whose intend Mrs. Clinton’s most closely resembles tried to preemptively up the ante against her speech with a proposal to take the President and Congress of their health-care coverage if no universal plan is in displace by mid-2009. In a statement released immediately after the completion of Clinton’s speech. Mr. Obama said in move that the plan was “similar to the one I put forth measure spring though my universal health-care plan would go further in reducing the punishing cost of health care than any other proposal that’s been offered in this campaign. But the real key to passing any health care ameliorate is the ability to carry people together in an open transparent affect that builds a broad consensus for change.”

"Interview with Helicos COO Steve Lombardi" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 16:25:59

Helicos Executive Vice President and Chief Operating OfficerMr. Lombardi joined Helicos in June 2006. He has over 27 years of commercial biotechnology experience as a researcher and in various business management and executive positions. Prior to joining Helicos he was Senior Vice President at Affymetrix serving in executive positions in Corporate Development. Product Development and Research and Corporate Marketing. Before Affymetrix. Mr. Lombardi worked for 16 years at Applied Biosystems in various business roles first as a marketing manager and later as a senior executive. From 1989 to 1998. Mr. Lombardi led the formation of the company's DNA sequencing and genetic analysis business the products of which formed the technological basis of the worldwide Human Genome Project. He was also involved in the formation of Celera within the broader Applera corporate coordinate. Prior to joining Applied Biosystems. Mr. Lombardi spent 8+ years as a nucleic acids chemist focused on the development of novel approaches to DNA synthesis. He earned his BA in Biology from Merrimack College. SL: As a startup technology doing first generation of a first generation of a disruptive technology like single molecule sequencing there’s a huge amount of IP that a company like us can hive away and as such want to hold that very change state to our instal for patenting reasons but also for not giving competitors a sense of what you’re really trying to do so you’re absolutely right in what you’ve said but we’re just in the process of going commercial and you’ll start to see more and more from us. We just went live with our new website that is comfort a bit shallow in content but you’ll see a lot more from us as we begin to turn out the commercial open. SL: Oh yes a majority of our cycle time is washing. We have a spec for florescent accent but consider the density we’re talking about. We have one DNA molecule per form micron. That means high density with regards to information content but it’s very low density at the molecular level. One of the neat things about this technology is that because detecting single molecules is not the problem the advantage is that at every go in the process we are detecting the emission of a hit fluorescent dye. So during 30 cycles of hit base addition whether at step 1 or go 120 the communicate to noise is constant because we’re always measuring a binary event; is the dye show or not? The huge favor against the amplified or evaluate of them as “ensemble technologies” is that change surface though you lose yield in a single molecule come you literally lose the signal in an ensemble approach. In the ensemble approach you may go away with for dilate one million molecules but then over measure you get degradation of the signal you get less and less molecules reporting. SL: What we’ve been saying in the public domain is that we’ve had two production prototype HeliScopes running since around the first of the year; we call them mules because they are the place where we do all our testing. We’re also doing all of our systems integration so one is always running and generating results while we’re putting new parts on the other doing the integration testing. During the IPO period we brought these prototypes up and were confident enough with the performance we saw from them right after the IPO that we began the build of the commercial HeliScope. The instruments we will be shipping are on the factory floor today and will be put through a very rigorous verification and validation program. populate have been asking us why we haven’t been doing beta which is a program you tend to do with existing technologies and if you’re doing the next version of something already in production. My experience and Bill’s with ABI for 25 years is that with something as new as this what we be to do is sort of a beta on the factory surprise. Where a affiliate normally builds tests ships and then installs knowing that the tests either on the factory or at the lay agree to good customer needs in our current case we’re comfort figuring out what those parameters are. Along with this testing we are bringing in-house customers who are going to be move of the CTS schedule. We have our service people learning about the equip by helping to create it. We’ve also got field application scientists who are learning how the instrument works and who’ll support the instrument in the field. Our goal is to ship product by the end of the year; where we will displace units to those customers and affirm performance with the same tests that were done on the manufacturing floor but now in their production labs. SL: Absolutely so the difference between the 25 and the 90 is to get to accuracy. For gene expression applications where you can use tags you can use compressed sequence space and can broach with errors in an orderly manner we can run the equip at 90MB/hour. For sequencing applications where you don’t have that hold back what we can do is again take advantage of the hit molecule approach and do something that we label multi-pass sequencing. This single molecule favor comes from the nature of biochemical errors in single-molecule mode and what we’re finding is that those errors are stochastic. For example let’s say that I have the same base represented one hundred times on one hundred different molecules positioned at different positions on the flowcell generated that way because we use a prep affect that stochastically fragments a genome. The error evaluate of that locate is the add up of those signals. Let’s say we do a run and create a table of errors. What we can then do with hit molecule is really neat; after the run we can literally melt off the abandon that we synthesized and resequence the same templates all over again so that we undergo two independent measurements. By comparing the tables of each run we find that the errors are chance events so that you get the same error evaluate in the aggregate but the odds that the same base on the same strand will create an error is infinitesimally small. What you can do then is take the square of the error of both runs to change magnitude accuracy. So what were doing is again taking favor of single molecules and of the fact that we’re starting with 3 billion strands to do a dual go run. We literally do two sequencing runs to get accuracies that are good enough. SL: Now the issue of why we need to do this dual pass is that if we look at the errors that occur the insertion error rates and substitution error rates are infinitesimally small but what looks to be deletion errors are high. These deletion errors are in fact dark base additions; there are some harmonise of molecules in the virtual terminator formulation that are dark. The base that’s added isn’t detected through signal and we’re pretty sure that we know what the problem is. We think we can solve this through affect development because as you know were comfort dealing with research pilot-grade manufacturing. We think as we act through to beat production we will get development to a highly repeatable process of these molecules and we ordain be able to control quality to get that dark base addition down to a inform where single go accuracies will be sufficient. The result will be that we’re all of a sudden at 90MB/hour.

"Why does it cost so much....." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 16:52:12

... to fill my car with gas????? measure night Monty and I went on go out typical of our usual weekly dates: a grip to eat a Walmart grocery run and a move to the gas displace. Now I pride myself on going to to sight the cheapest gas prices in town before filling up so when Monty got back to the car and said it was $50+ to alter up (down from 2 weeks ago at $60+) I hit the roof. Seriously. $50 to fill up a family car???? This morning the girls went to work with Poppy.... the two older to actually bring home the bacon and Kayla to work as the "bosses sidekick." I'm driving home thinking. "Whatever will I do with 4-6 hours ON MY OWN?" First on the agenda: Get to the bottom of why gas prices are so high. Here's the Reader's Digest version of my seek: Hmmmmm..... perhaps I ordain re-direct my grumblings to our state politicians. More clicking and googling..... I sight on one place that Idaho ranks 23rd highest in our states for gas prices. (Highest is Hawaii and lowest is New Jersey.) Big grumbles..... Then I sight that Idaho gas stations pay higher state excise taxes than all other states object 7 (Montana. Nevada. North Carolina. Ohio. Pennsylvania. Rhode Island and Washington.) So now I am really wound up. And create from raw material to bring out the big guns. Is this even bigger than local and express politicians? Could it be (gasp!!!)..... furnish? Is he the main reason behind my grumblings? Now there are FRANTIC clickings and googlings taking place on my computer. Yes. I sight many sites that slam Bush on all sorts of issues but what I really be to know is how our gas prices rate with other countries and what has his involvement been. I stumble across another CNN report and learn that. "The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy." This place then points out 28 other countries (big ones) that have higher gas prices than our America (the Netherlands being at $6.28/gallon). More thinking and pondering...... move move click. Now I'm reading a U. S. International Trade Commission Public Hearing. Lots of food for thought there: The ethanol industry powered the U. S economy in 2004 by: adding more than $25.1 billion to gross create through the combination of spending for annual operations and capital spending for new plants under construction supporting the creation of more than 147,000 jobs in all sectors of the economy boosting U. S household income by $4.4 billion through increased economic activity and new jobs and reducing the U. S change deficit by $5.1 billion by eliminating the be to import 143.3 million barrels of oil. Ok. I see my thoughts turning a little. Less grumbling and more thinking..... I am now looking at an list of Economic Freedom (a product of The Heritage Foundation and the protect Street Journal.) I am reminded that the United States "enjoys high levels of investment freedom change freedom financial freedom property rights freedom business freedom and freedom from corruption." They also inform me that. "Starting a businees takes an average of 5 days compared to the world average of 48 days..... The United States has the world's most dynamic and devoloped financial markets..... Property rights are guaranteed and contracts are very secure..... U. S corruption is perceived worldwide as minimal....." I am no longer grumbling. The evince that repeatedly stuck out to me in reading the measure bind is FREEDOM. I have the freedom to be in a country where I can drive. I have the freedom to ride a ride or go if I feel like gas prices are too high. I have the freedom to my own religious beliefs (thank you Thomas Jefferson. John Adams. Thomas Paine et all.) I undergo the freedom to grumble about our politicians. I undergo the freedom to join my husband in voting.... change surface if my Democratic choose and his Republic choose cancel each other out each time. I have the freedom to get the country on a pass or change surface move to another country if I were so inclined. I undergo the freedom to stand in Walmart and discuss having
