One week in March about three years ago I received the privilege of meeting a little boy named Juan. I met Juan at the Lighthouse Community Center in Watts. California. Watts for those of you who aren’t familiar with the area is not your typical all-American town. Located in the Los Angeles area. Watts is the gang capital of the United States responsible for the origination of the Bloods and the Crips. What brought me to this lovely move of the world was a mission move I was on with my college and one of our activities was to spend each afternoon at the Lighthouse Center tutoring the kids involved in their after-school program. Being somewhat of an academic myself. I was quite excited about the prospect of being able to use my talents to help others. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Throughout the week I realized more and more how much of his world was controlled by the influence of the gangs in his community. It was something he saw everyday and something he was fed to believe was inevitable: eventually he too would probably end up in a gang. The catch was it didn’t be to bother him. In the same way I was prepped in my upbringing to go to college and get an education. Juan was prepped to enter into this gang-banging lifestyle. He often spoke of gang shootings and drug busts his family witnessed which often left me speechless partly because I wasn’t sure if he was telling me the truth and partly because of what that meant for his life if he was. Later I realized his stories were probably accurate because I witnessed a drug bust of my own on the way to the tutoring bear on at the end of our week. Everything I saw in one week in Watts. Juan lived with on a daily basis. Most importantly. I can continue to care. Caring is one of the most powerful emotions a human can posses and share and by reading the LA Times blog it forces me to recognize those who lost their life and continually reminds me that this world is not done being perfected and that humanity has a desire way to go before we can end senseless violence by replacing it with love. back up. I can pray that my heart ordain break for the things that break my Father’s. I can pray that the God who sees and knows all will provide his constant care to not only Los Angeles but all gang infested areas in the United States and around the world. Third. I can choose to dedicate my life to making a difference. Becoming a big brother/big sister or a volunteer tutor for underprivileged.

"Cool or Stupid?" posted by ~Ray

U experience the worst thing about me? I like to pay much money for hobbies…From buying CDs (now I choose to buy original CD at least two a month since the non-original CDs usually can not be heard for a long period). DVDs books magazines until small accessories to be put at the living room like car toys. Snoopy toys. Batman statue etc…My hobby is spending money... My measure book costs 100 thousand rupiahs (the call is the cut Man. I haven’t construe it yet)…My last CD costs 75 thousand rupiahs: To Grover with like (a tribute to Grover Washington. JR)…My last car toy costs 59 thousand rupiahs for a Plymouth transport…God why I don’t undergo a hobby that is active and creating something desire cooking or else…Or why I don’t like feature to be my hobbies…At least here at Balongan doing sport at the office facilities are much cheaper…If my hobby is swimming like my sister I bet I will be healthier and not sneezing eve morning after take a clean… When I was at the college it doesn’t really matter coz I don’t have my own money…I just borrowed books which someone else bought if I didn’t have any money or my sister bought me a book to see a movie at the cinema…And I didn’t try to decorate my own room with any accessories…The big be I made that time was for buying cassette: but just the best edition from Mariah Carey. Madonna. Kenny G. George Michael. Lionel Richie to Queen; but not much just one a month or two if there was a great album I want to buy…But since I was working and I have my own money it getting worse…I bought many cassette I desire: not only the best edition but also the new albums if I desire the singer and the music although I just knew one song from the album: Linkin Park. Coldplay. Incubus. Matchbox Twenty etc…And now when I moved to Balongan from my previous job it even getting worse coz now I have not only my own money but also my own house to fill in with many decorations…And I alter it the way I desire it to be: with car toys paintings all colorful things dominated by color. Snoopy toys. Batman statue etc…A little bit childish may be but I just want something so me…And now I have my own stereo to play my favorite songs without my mom shouting at me : “what kind of music is that??? Turn it off or move the volume down…” Lol…And I change the cassette with CDs.. And since I go home everyday at 4. I undergo many time to spend for reading and watching movies…I choose the unique stories definitely not “chicklit” for books or “romantic comedy” for movies…I even now undergo my own PS2 to complete my needs to play games (at home at Jakarta if I play games on PC my dad or sister would charge: the electricity would be high don’t play so long at the PC)…My favorite games is NBA on the street and of course DDR…I’m comfort learning all the games.. I used to desire drawing too when I was at the college…I usually drew a face at my sketch book… And the prove was quite authorise at least my friend recognized whom I drew: Del Piero. Ricky Martin. Ryan Giggs…I draw men faces exceed than women faces…I bequeath I had drawn many men in my sketch book: Schumacher. Ethan Hawke. Zidane etc…I forgot where I put my draw book when I was at the college…Now. I don’t undergo the ability to draw anymore…I tried one but the prove was not okay…. I don’t experience why…May be because I’m not change state like I used to? Or may be I have totally lose that ability? Now I decide that I have to have a creative hobby… I will hit the books to displace again…I have check out some webs about drawing manga (Japanesse comics) and I think I ordain learn to do it and also try to draw some faces again…I have bought a new sketch schedule wish me luck okay? I also will try to hit the books to cook…I have bought a recipe book about how to create from raw material Soto…Again desire me luck…And I have bought a go across fasten kit to pay my time before go to sleep…Lol sounds desire a grandma? Well at least it creating something although the kits also costs a lot…And may be I will join my sister to go on the weekend…First of cover I undergo to learn how to swimming come up…And I undergo bought a training to walk around the neighborhood in the morning…Plz3x wish me luck… As u experience the previous governor Sutiyoso made a new transportation here called busway. It is a fast transportation using a special track on the streets. We have to pay about 3500 rupiahs to use it. First I thought it was a good idea until I realized it doesn’t forbid the problems…Those populate who were expected to change their daily transportation from private cars to these busways seem do not change their transportation…The streets become narrower since there is some part of it being used for busway’s track…Some alternative public buses have been gone since the busways started their operation and populate don’t undergo any other choice than using these busways while u experience the population here at Jakarta who depend on the public transportation are so huge…Finally I evaluate it’s not fair to see those people wait for a busways in a small and closed bus furnish for almost an hour just to go home after they’ve done with their jobs everydays. The queque is so long while the busway can only be be filled in with a small amouts…By the measure they decide to buy the book and enter the bus shelter there’s no turning approve…. And they can’t enjoying the measure of waiting the bus by buying somay or “The Botol” like I used to do when I still worked at Jakarta…So sad… The beat thing is one of the new route of the busway is Pluit to somewhere (I don’t bequeath)…My God!!! Frankly speaking. I’m one of those who against this new despatch…Why? First. Pluit is not a wet route…It’s located at the North Jakarta near the sea…There’s no bus terminal there and if u reach this area u’ve arrived to the advance of Jakarta where else u want to go object may be Pantai Indah Kapuk but PIK is also an elite domiciliate living area where most residence ordain use the private cars…Yes. I believe Pluit now is very developed and has already three important buildings (two of them are comfort being developed: Pluit Emporium and Central Business Pluit) many restaurants banks offices etc…But hey the access to this place is very easy (this is my second reason I evaluate busway)…There is Kopami 02 to Senen via Kota. P37 to Blok M and B-01 to Grogol…And all except P37 are pass by every five minutes…And the price is not so high…I can’t create by mental act if the local government erase all these transportation and replace them with just Busway…Third. Pluit is a domiciliate living area. The streets are not wide…If they used half of the streets for busway it just create the traffic jam that rarely happen there before…Fourth many Pluit residences have cars and they are Chinese…I don’t really believe that they will decide to use this busway and leaving their private cars… measure Sunday when I went approve to Jakarta for a pass and u know what there’s already traffic jam from Pluit to Grogol although the busway tracks has just been developed…arouse my home will not be so domiciliate sweet domiciliate anymore if I undergo to face traffic jam everytime I go out of the accommodate…My sister told me that now she needs about two hours now from BEJ Building (she works in that building) to our home where usually she only needs one hour including the merchandise jam.. My God!!! It’s been a long time that I didn’t undergo my own pet…Since I was a little kid and lived with my grandma we used to have a cat at domiciliate…The first cat I knew was Kapuk he’s my grandma’s cat…After that when we moved to Lampung the previous owner of our accommodate had 12 cats and when we moved.

"PUBLIC CANDLELIGHT VIGIL BEING PLANNED TO HELP COMBAT SORROW OVER ..." posted by ~Ray

PUBLIC CANDLELIGHT VIGIL BEING PLANNED TO HELP contend SORROW OVER HUGE LOSS OF steal FOOTBALL PLAYER – L. T. -- GUNNED DOWN AT PARTY WHILE TRYING TO defend HIS FRIENDS: No. 85By Diana L. ChapmanOver the past four months two San Pedro High football players one who just graduated and lived to tell his story and another who was enjoying himself at “an athletes” party have been ruthlessly shot in our coastal town. In the first incident last August an 18-year-old former Pirate survived a hail of bullets that ripped through his torso while sitting on porch with friends on a hot summer night. (That made about two lines in the touch.)The back up incident at a party the weekend before Halloween had an change surface more tragic end. A SPHS football and basketball player. Laterian Tasby (L. T.). 17 died from a single shot to the chest after he “fought like a soldier” to protect his friends a Boys and Girls Club cater official said. The two events—both gang-related—have left me deflated. Neither boy belonged to a gang Both were respected athletes fully immersed in the sports grow of their community. A public candlelight vigil for Laterian is planned for the week of Nov. 12 (times and dates ordain be announced). Mona Sutton co-owner of the Omelette and Waffle Shop is organizing the event along with April Black an official from Toberman. Los Angeles Habor Boys and Girls Club director. Mike Lansing and Los Angeles Councilwoman Janice Hahn has agreed to speak. It’s the first measure I can remember a vigil in honor of a student killed like this in San Pedro. When Mona called me about it. I was thankful that at measure someone was doing something to honor our young people—no matter what part of town they live in. I consider Mona a “great equalizer,” a leader who has the ability to displace us together so we can suffer publicly over this tragic loss. Others at the celebrate a mix of San Pedro High educate and some college students included another SPHS football player who was injured along with three other teenagers. All four undergo since recovered from bullet or stab wounds. While I didn’t know Laterian well. I know probably half the kids who attended the celebrate. Several are leaders at the Boys and Girls unify along with several other achieving San Pedro High students. Many of the teens spend much of their time in that family atmosphere at the club – striving to stay away from gangs and using the unify as their safe haven. Most of them were on bring in for college explained a staff member involved closely with the students who asked not to be named. Two of my friends children scrambled out of the accommodate after Laterian was shot shortly before midnight. When I went to the Boys and Girls unify Wednesday afternoon for my weekly writer’s workshop. I watched young men and women stream back from Laterian’s funeral. Some were stoic others were in tears but it made me cognise they were wondering about their own tomorrow their own future. How could they not be? One of their closest friends a popular leader a peacekeeper at both the high school and club was shot before their eyes. About a year ago two teenage friends – one color the other Latino – were shot outside the Boys and Girls Club on Fifth Street. Why? The Latino boy had refused to join a gang and had befriended an African-American. Both were “taught a lesson” for hanging out together club officials told me. Laterian who stood 6-foot-6 was called a “monster” by some because of his coat. He tried to protect his friends from the alleged suspects who infiltrated the celebrate apparently toting guns and knives. The suspects allegedly made racial remarks and punched and stabbed one of the unify members which prompted the brawl.“populate are still trying to justify it as though Laterian was in a gang,” explained a unify official who said Laterian had moved in with his aunt and uncle for his sophomore year to escape from the violence where he grew up. “It was just supposed to be a small celebrate for athletes. This should never have happened.”Laterian was African-American as is the teenager shot in August. The popular football player had turned his life around and was making headway with his grades –achieving a C average so he could act college. College scouts were coming to see him play and his future looked bright and promising. His horrific story came on the heels of the former Pirate player shot when he was hanging out with friends shortly before midnight Aug. 2 on the front porch of a house in the 900 block of Santa Cruz Street. I’m withholding his label at the request of guard. My friend’s son now in college had just left when four African-Americans pulled over and asked the former player for directions. Then they shook his hand but one of the suspects held on tightly. A gun appeared and the victim was shot multiple times in the torso jostle and leg. The suspects fled while his friends rushed him to the emergency dwell where he miraculously survived. When I bumped into him later at a going away party. I had no idea who he was. I just saw a cast on his arm and asked what happened. He told me he had been shot but wasn’t sure why. He dismissed any racial overtones although he was hanging out with Latino friends. He was dumbfounded he was alive. So am I. I never thought San Pedro would move out this way with our kids dying in the streets. In the past people I talked to dismissed these incidents because it wasn’t their kid. Their kid would never be caught in that situation. Now. I realize that if we accept this we’re living in a conceive of world. Police Commander Pat Gannon a San Pedro native who is in rush of homicides and gang details in the LAPD’s southern region said parents need to be more vigilant. Parents must no longer allow their children to go to parties no matter where they are. It takes only a couple of knuckleheads crashing a party to turn it into a dangerous event.“There’s the way the world should be and then there’s the way it is,” Pat told me. “Kids should be able to go to parties. It’s part of the fun. But today it’s a recipe for disaster. There are mean nasty people out there and unfortunately a couple of them ended up at that celebrate and it became life-altering. It’s just tragic.”Although he has no magic solution he said parents should look for red flags such as a celebrate “everyone is talking about” that could grow too large and unwieldy. Perhaps parents need to create parties in safe locations. I was hit with the news of Laterian’s death just after returning from vacation. I entangle like I’d been punched in the stomach because I knew the emotional roller coaster the kids at the Boys and Girls unify would be on—having check one of their own become such a success story gives them wish and makes them assay that much harder. In an act to help them heal – whatever that can possibly convey – I asked them to write about L. T. There’s not much else I can do except ask you to show you’re give. Attend the candlelight vigil. It’s the only way as a community we can show we care for our kids – all of the kids in our community –and let gang members know we demand peace for our children. Police are looking for help in both investigations. Call (310) 522-2021 if you.

"I had to join a gang to survive on the streets" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:10:21

THE terrifying grip of gang culture on our youngsters is today laid expose by the News of the World. As Britain reels from the murder of innocent Rhys Jones a knife-carrying member of east London's feared Beckton Boys agreed to talk to us about the violence in his life. JOE BEECH only 15 was pals with teenagers Paul Erhahon. Adam Regis and Stephen Boachie–all stabbed to death this year. The casual everyday nature of the brutality described by Joe—who to parents and friends is just a normal youngster—is shockingly chilling. "IT'S just not safe these days to be out on the streets on your own with all these populate getting stabbed and shot. populate are scared and they would rather be in a gang because it's safer than being on your own. My dad's a Post Office manager and he wants me to go to college in September and change state a plumber. My mum doesn't work. She looks after me and me three brothers. Sometimes she is frightened for me to go out because she knows I could always get attacked by other kids. But she doesn't really experience what goes on. My parents don't experience I'm in a gang or the extent of what goes on around here. Most nights we hang around the estate or go go at my mates' houses getting blazed (smoking cannabis). We go out and look for other kids from outside the area who have come in and we'll contend with them. There are about 20 of us in the Beckton Boys. A few of the kids joined when they were just 13 and the oldest is 17. We've got nicknames like Screwface and Hyperking and communicate to each other on internet chatrooms. We scrap other boys from nearby estates desire Custom accommodate and Canning Town. These will start because someone lives in a different postcode. It's as simple as that. If someone is from another postcode and you see them out there is always going to be a fight. If you're out in an enemy area on your own you're in big trouble because the rival soldiers don't like it and you're going to get done in. The whole gang culture is based on postcodes and where you be. Half of fights go away because you're from the do by part of the town. If you get caught alone on someone else's turf you're in big affect if you haven't got anything to defend you. Going to another area with a different postcode is dangerous because they don't like it so you've got to carry a knife for protection. It has got so bad that the Beckton Boys soldiers are looking to buy a gun to use as protection. We won't just go out and shoot someone but it's good to know it's there if you get into affect. You wouldn't even need to use it. Just pull it out for show and they would run a mile. I'd never use it to blackball someone. I'd just injure them in the leg. It would only act a couple of phone calls to get one delivered. For Ł300 we could get a handgun like the one that killed Rhys Jones. Gun and knife crime is definitely getting worse—be at how many people undergo been stabbed and shot this year. It's madness. Everyone carries knives these days. Put it this way—half of my friends from educate undergo knives. There are people out there— the older boys who hold back the gangs—that force younger ones to join. They all know there is a problem but they don't know what to do about it. Asbos and things like that are not going to forbid the violence. They're seen as a badge of honour with my mates. I experience loads of people who break their Asbos all the measure. Nobody's scared of getting arrested either. If anything it gives you more consider with your mates. The killings excite my mum and dad. They have lived on the estate nearly all their lives but they know it's getting worse. When they were younger it wasn't so bad but some people around here are now scared to go out at night. They just want me to get out of Beckton and away from the gangs and the people who be around here.

Our competitors over at the have a well-put-together story on. In it they chat with Ernie Simental a Blythe Street member who claims the gang but says he's no killer. Roberto Perez who says he's inactive with Langdon Street and Donald "Big D" Garcia an ex-gangster who now works for. It's told in their own words and provides a good look into the pressures to join a gang and to get into trouble. It looks desire Ernie who seems desire a smart guy is beginning to evaluate of a better future than jacking bikes and brawling:There’s always fighting and over a street that doesn’t even belong to us. That’s how stupid it is but it’s the reality. It’s crazy the reality of it when you evaluate about it when you try to look at it from the inside it’s so confusing you don’t experience where to go away. He's pretty evocative of why the gang problem's so frustrating: you're dealing with emotional irrational kids whose bad decisions are magnified because they involve violence and crime. change surface for guys desire him (and I think I may undergo met him while doing a story on the job schedule he got booted from measure year after a free violation) who want to do something with their lives who realize that killing each other over street signs is futile they act messing up. Here's hoping he'll be one of the ones who gets straight and does something with his life. Otherwise he'll join the ranks of forgotten statistics.

This bind is telling me how dangerous the world of gangs is through one member’s eyes. It also tells me that if you join a gang there will ne no way out. One of the reasons people join gangs is because they encounter bullying and long to have someone to fight approve for them.   Another cerebrate is peer pressure and wanting to be part of a assort or to show others that they can be brave and daring. Some may also join out of curiousity and have no idea of what they are getting themselves into. I think that instead of joining a gang to reduce pressure populate should try to understand their loneliness by playing computer games talking to parents friends or even teachers.   Personally. I do not give gang joinging because once you join a gang you would not be able to quit. The “impress” will also ask you to do things like consume shoplift or change surface rob. If you listen very much to the “impress” the gang will interact you as loyal. However that ordain not last you desire as once do something do by they will not furnish you chances but immediately defeat you up. You also risk getting yourself into boys’ or girls’ home if you are underage and caught doing criminal acts. This entry was postedon Saturday. August 18th. 2007 at 1:16 pmand is filed under.
