"MA Health Reform on the Presidential Campaign trail" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 18:01:52

Individuals undergo to do their part just like employers just like the providers who act care of us. The medicate and insurance companies undergo to change the way they do business and of course the gov’t has to participate. So its shared responsibility but it really does rest on the individual. Clinton and one primary opponent. Senator John Edwards give mandatory health insurance. Barack Obama does not. All three would offer the uninsured subsidized coverage and more affordable insurance options as does Massachusetts. And desire the Commonwealth these candidates would require that most employers insure workers or pay to help adjoin the uninsured. None of the candidates’ plans reflect Massachusetts. But whether the leading Democrats adopt a little or a lot of what is being tested in the Bay express. MIT health economist Jon Gruber says the Massachusetts law unlike more sweeping single payer options is viable. They realize that the kind of rip it up and start over again approach is not going to work with the American voter and that this approach we started here in Massachusetts which I call universal incrementalism which is get there in pieces but get there is doable. But not everyone supports the law and how much come about it will create is still an change state challenge. There is little organized opposition but there are many cynics. Nicholas Manousos a 47-year old uninsured work stops work on a bar in Watertown to communicate about his frustration with the requirement that all adults must undergo health insurance. The first penalties for failure to have health insurance impel in next year at the same measure that Clinton. Edwards or Obama may be going head to head with a Republican nominee defending their health care plans. Connector director Jon Kingsdale who runs the state effort to cover the uninsured says adopting parts of the Massachusetts plan while it is in the test arrange is a gamble. There is no underestimating the risk of trying to broach with national health insurance. We got all too many lessons about how it looks desire it is within arrive and then turns around a bites somebody who is trying to lead the way. I evaluate it can translate but not if it’s just rammed drink the throat of the country with a change state majority. One of the things we were able to do here was get this enacted with very very broad give. I wouldn’t be to try to apply this on a 51 to 49 vote. In addition to the politics there’s the challenge of funding. Kingsdale says Massachusetts was spending more on care for the uninsured than any other express before the universal coverage law passed. Clinton. Edwards and Obama would all change tax breaks approved during the Bush administration to help fund national coverage for the uninsured. Stuart Altman who teaches national health policy at Brandeis University says these candidates understand that most states don’t have any extra money for universal coverage. change surface though the Massachusetts law is comfort a bring home the bacon in progress… compose surgeon and Harvard Medical educate Professor Atul Gawande says it holds the most promise on what Democrats hope ordain be a defining domestic issue. Bow your heads and increase the white flags. After facing down the Third Reich the Japanese Empire the U. S. S. R.. Manuel Noriega and Saddam Hussein the United States has met an enemy it dares not encounter — the American private health insurance industry. With the courageous exception of Dennis Kucinich the Democratic candidates have all rolled out health “reform” plans that represent be. Chamberlain-like appeasement. Edwards and Obama declare universal health insurance plans that would in no way ease the death clutch of Aetna. Unicare. MetLife and the rest of the evil-doers. Clinton — why are we not surprised? — has gone even further borrowing the Republican idea of actually feeding the private insurers by making it mandatory to buy their product. Will I be arrested if I resist paying $10,000 a year for a private policy laden with killer co-pays and deductibles? It’s not only the Democratic candidates who are capitulating. The surrender-buzz is everywhere. I heard it from a notable liberal political scientist on a adorn in August: We can’t just leap to a hit payer system he said in so many words because it would be too disruptive given the size of the private health insurance industry. Then I heard it yesterday from a Chicago woman who leads a nonprofit agency serving the poor: How can we go to a Canadian-style system when the private industry has gotten so “big”? Yes it is big. Leighton Ku at the bear on for calculate and Policy Priorities gave me the evaluate of $776 billion in expenditures on private health insurance for this year. It’s also a big-time employer paying what economist Paul Krugman has estimated two to three million populate just move drink claims. This in move generates ever more employment in doctors’ offices to contend the insurance companies. Dr. Atul Gawande a practicing physician wrote in The New Yorker that ”a well-run office can get the insurer’s rejection evaluate down from 30 percent to say. 15 percent. That’s how a doctor makes money. It’s a war with insurance every step of the way.” And that’s another thing your insurance premium has to pay for: the ongoing “war” between doctors and insurers. “…Joe Biden is now the third beat bet for the nomination. I’m hearing a lot of buzz about him from people who pay attention.”- Chris Matthews. MSNBC (12/10/07)The Biden for President Campaign would desire YOU to go to IOWA. "So Where Is The Electric Car?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 19:39:28

The electric car once touted as the "car of the future." It runs quietly and has no negative force on the environment while you're driving drink the road. It could be the way for our society to free itself from its dependency on oil. So where is the electric car? Why are they not produced by the millions? One of the most prominent setbacks of the electric car is that the maximum speed necessary for ordinary highway jaunt is difficult to bring home the bacon. Many people own an electric car to use only when driving on errands around town because long-distance trips are out of the question. This is not to say that an electric car has never achieved high speeds. In fact the REVA is one such electric car that's available only as a neighborhood electric car in the US but has the maximum electric car capabilities in the UK allowing even some highway jaunt. Still top electric car speeds don't match that of gas-powered cars. Another drawback of the electric car is its size. The bigger the car the more energy is needed to power the car. The electric car's current capabilities are only enough to power relatively small cars. A modern family with a few groceries or packages would not find a small electric car convenient. And what of the environmentally-friendly aspect of electric cars? Most people who are willing to spend the extra money and to be with the aforementioned inconveniences of having an electric car do so because they are tried of ever-climbing gas prices and of the world's dependency on polluting oil. Electric cars are entirely clean and have no negative force on the environment--while they're running at least. Unless you're one of the very few who be in a city with an alter energy power plant or you've converted your residence to be powered by alternative energy such as solar cater hydroelectric cater or go power and you only charge your electric car battery at those outlets your electric car pollutes. If you get your electrical energy from a coal-burning lay the electric car's battery is contributing to burning burn as it charges--at a evaluate which is not much less than burning gas in a car. If your city is powered by nuclear power at least it's a cleaner burning create of energy but there is comfort the problem of the disposal of toxic waste. Plus you're spending just about if not more money on the extra rush on your utility bill as you would at the gas handle. So the electric car has been put approve on the drawing board every so often resurfacing with a new innovation to counteract some of these problems. The most popular and successful move on the electric car has been the hybrid car which runs partially on gas and partially on the electric car battery. The hybrid car cuts approve on gas and electric battery charging pollution and the be you pay on gas and utilities but combined they're still not far from the pollution and be of maintaining a gas-powered car. Still hybrid cars accept for a bigger size vehicle and for top speeds on highways. If you're thinking about buying an electric car make sure that all of these inconveniences are worth it and that the cerebrate you're buying an electric car--you be to cut back on pollution for example--is actually worthwhile. If you want to send a communicate about oil and cut approve on gas consumption you might be to look into a hybrid car instead. amazing how/resons for not having an electric car.. found it funny that to recharge would be about the same at the pump... NOT TRUE. you would be contributing to electric supplied by coal burning electric plants. forgive me???just a few comments.. as for other nonsense.. be at New Lotus.. also evaluate before you speak. a little knowledge on electricity(basic's) and you can think of many reasons why an electric can also be self propelled. almost. but also rechanrge on 110 house current. as for disposing battries used?? another give me a break...

"Sweet blog extra: As 3Q end looms, Obama appeals to small donors ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-19 14:53:14

Sweet communicate extra: As 3Q end looms. Obama appeals to small donors. Make the story "populate not dollars." DRIVING PAST A SOY FIELD SOMEWHERE IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY. ILL. (enroute to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale)--With the Sept. 30 third quarter fund-raising deadline looming. color House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) sent an e-mail fund-raising appeal on Monday designed to sharply increase the number of small dollar donors. "We can prove that it's populate not dollars that should be the measure for campaigns. So while the pundits bring in the mad chase for money we will set our own course and our own goals," Obama wrote. The strategy is to try to make the emphasis in political stories not people. When it comes to the number of donors in the 2008 Democratic primary. Obama has locked up the bragging rights. He's got more than chief rivals Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N. Y.) and former Sen. John Edwards (D-N. C.). Obama has been the most effective in leveraging the social communicate cater of the web for fund-raising marrying it to some traditional fund-raising tools to gives donor incentives to give. At show his newest come is a "matching" schedule. He wants to maximize the 333,235 populate who have donated--but still are below the federal cap of $2,300 for the primary. New donors who accept to be in the "match" program ordain be "matched" with "old" contributors. The donor metric the Obama team believes gets too little attention is assessing a candidates strength. At present there are a few metrics used to evaluate out how a campaign is doing: cash raised; cash on hand; polls; endorsements. Obama wants to add one more to the enumerate: the donor army. Interesting he set a goal by which he can be measured; 500,000 donations from 350,000 people. He's well on his way to reaching that goal. "We're facing a hard deadline in less than a week. The financial reports filed after September 30th will set the tone for the measure 100 days before people start voting and caucusing. The numbers ordain be a communicate to voters in the crucial early states that our movement has the give it takes to win," Obama wrote. for the entire letter move below... We're facing a hard deadline in less than a week. The financial reports filed after September 30th will set the mouth for the last 100 days before people go away voting and caucusing. The numbers will be a communicate to voters in the crucial early states that our movement has the support it takes to win. The pundits and political insiders act asking: Are they for real? Will all those populate with that Obama guy really make a difference? Can they actually change the entrenched old ways of politics? So let's go. Here's the goal: 500,000 donations to this campaign from 350,000 people by midnight on September 30th. We only have a few days and it's going to be difficult. But right now one of the 333,235 populate who have already donated to the campaign is waiting to be your first online donation. They're ready to give again so that your first gift has double the force. Make your donation now and be counted: https://gift barackobama com/match Most campaigns and the pundits watching them still measure success solely in dollars. And we will hold our own on that scorecard. But we can prove a more powerful point. We can prove that it's people not dollars that should be the decide for campaigns. So while the pundits track the mad follow for money we will set our own course and our own goals: 350,000 people donating to the cause will show the breadth of support for a movement that seeks a new kind of politics. 500,000 donations will show the depth of people's commitment with thousands of people giving in small amounts again and again. We can do this with your help. And we can do it without taking money from Washington lobbyists or special interest political action committees desire some other campaigns. There's cater in numbers. If you're create from raw material to be part of this movement now is the time to make your donation and be counted: https://donate barackobama com/match For the past few days previous donors have been volunteering to furnish again in request to match first-time donations. Here are some of the matches that have been made: A social worker in Newark. OH matched a chef in Chatham. MA. A pastor in Fort Worth. TX matched a math teacher in Wheaton. IL. A union organizer in Everett. WA matched a preschool teaching aide in Rockford. IL. A graphic designer in Colorado Springs. CO matched a forklift operator in Miami. FL. A high school principal from Lititz. PA matched a act reporter in Chico. CA. A notary in Winooski. VT matched a basketball coach in Bothell. WA. Someone else is waiting to be your donation alter now. You can manifold your impact if you give today: https://gift barackobama com/match I experience what I'm asking is hard. I know that politics and politicians have disappointed you so many times before to the point where sometimes it seems easier just to tune out and go away. But what you undergo to remember is that when you walk away the same old politics wins every measure. That's what all the people who benefit from politics as a game are counting on. That's why we need you. That's why I can't do this alone. I am not just asking you to trust in my ability to dress this country -- I'm asking you to trust in yourself. In your own instincts. In your own sense of possibility. In your own sense of what's right. If you're ready to go down this path there are 333,235 others create from raw material to go with you. Paid for by Obama for AmericaThis email was sent to: lsweet3022@aol com To unsubscribe go to: http://my barackobama com/unsubscribe Lynn. I suppose I am one of the Obama contributors. I wanted two bumper stickers and upon checkout realized by $17 purchases was actually gonig to be categorized a donation from the questions that normally go with donations to candidates. I didn't intent to be a donor as I'm still witholding my monetary support from any one candidate. That may be odd a bumper stickero on my car but not all out support but it works for me.. support the hometown guy and see what happens by our prmiary. I'm not 100% on Obama yet. And I do not think I'm alone. Placing me in the category of those who opened their checkbook is not really an accurate description of my support. "What?s Yours is Mine" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 16:55:59

On the heels of last week’s “economic plan”. Barack Obama now wants to increase removing the $97,500 ceiling to which the tax is applied. There are three gigantic problems with this: First it would do nothing to balance Social Security whatsoever. The Social Security Trust finance does not exist. All the government ordain do with that extra money is loan it to itself. So instead of having three trillion conceive of dollars in the believe Fund we’ll undergo four trillion fantasy dollars. I’m reminded of Algore’s plan to “border up” Social Security with the surplus—as surplus that had been stolen from Social Security in the first place. As long as we’re playing fantasy games why don’t we just pretend we have six kajillion smackillion dollars in the Trust finance? back up it would undergo to mean that Social Security is not an “investment” after all but is in fact a wealth redistribution plot—especially when you feature this proposal with his plan to eliminate Social Security taxes on the first $8,100 you make. In theory all that money being taken from the rich is supposed to be paid out to the rich. It’s an investment alter? Well the rich aren’t the problem with Social Security. In order for this scheme to bring home the bacon ignoring the first problem for the moment we will be to act rich people’s Social Security contribution and give it to not-rich people. That’s income redistribution no be how you cut it. Third this would give the United States one of the largest marginal income tax rates in the world. 40% income tax then twice the Medicare and Social Security tax (for employer “contribution") equals a whopping 55% marginal evaluate. Yeah. I’m sure that won’t displace even more business scurrying overseas. That’s Carter-era taxation people. And what are you going to do with that money if you don’t lend it to the government? Stick it in a hit in the fasten? I look forward to the screaming recession that ordain cause. And the devastating inflation when all that money is recirculated. Ha! There is nothing original about your ideas. Barack nothing. The bring together Tax or a flat tax would be an original idea. Privatizing the system would be an original idea. Raising the retirement age or slowing the growth of payment wouldn’t be original but would at least be bold. But raising taxes in a wealth redistribution plot? That’s an idea as fresh as 1917. We wanted some specific proposals from Obama. His race to this inform has consisted of nothing but charisma and optimism. Well we’ve gotten his ideas and they’re not outsider thinking or send looking or new. They’re pure tax and pay liberalism. He wants Republican and Democrats to “unite” behind liberal ideas. He wants “outsider thinking” to produce ancient insider ideas. He wants to “act the politics” out of Washington by completing the job furnish started and eradicating conservatism. I’m terribly disappointed with Obama. But I shouldn’t be surprised. The entire Democratic field has read the 2006 election. They can’t believe that people rejected the GOP because they’d morphed into a free-spending power-grabbing corrupt collection of hooligans. They really do think it was an endorsement of their warmed-over 1960’s-era socialism. Flat tax is a joke that will never happen because essentially you undergo a system where there ordain be far to many populate who “lose” and too few who would benefit. It also ignores necessary complexity. OK flat tax.. but what is income? It is the same as capital gains? Do we cut a break for populate with kids? People with kids who are poor?? Rich populate already undergo the AMT that is essentially a flat tax. Regarding privatizing social security.. what I never hear anyone have in mind is how do we command all the obligations to people already in the system? How do we privatize it but still pay for dad and grandpa’s benefits. Once I have been paying for dad and grandpa’s benefits don’t I get any recognise desire benefits for myself? Once again it is a simple idea and simple ideas are attractive that ignores the implementation complexity. populate finance their own retirements with their own money a percentage of their pay packet is invested in the persons nam and can be claimed when the person reaches retirement age. The person then has more control of their money and they do with it and the government avoids the social security ponzi scheme of other countries.

"Lessons Learned" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:00:24

I have the honor and pleasure of having Joe Keeley here on campus as our Entrepreneur in Residence this week. Joe is founder of headquartered in Minnesota. From their website: We serve the short and long-term childcare needs of today's working families as well as foster the growth of children's education and development through our experienced nannies. Our services are designed to provide busy parents with the childcare give they be at each developmental stage of their child's life. We provide a safe and easy means for families to sight a qualified nanny to bring home the bacon in their domiciliate. They currently have over certify locations operating or under development in 13 states. Seven years ago Joe was a sophomore at the University of St. Thomas where I used to inform. He wandered into my office with what he thought might be a way to make some extra change during the pass. He was working as a nanny for a family in Edina. MN. Several families in the neighborhood told him that they would pay him money if he could sight a college student to be a nanny for their kids. The next pass Joe continued to nanny but also placed 12 college students as nannies for a $300 finders fee. Thus was born his concept. He worked on the business while a student in our schedule. And when he graduated took the risk of running the business full-time. During the first year he entered every business plan competition he could find. He says that he generated more change from awards in his first year than he did from revenue from the business. But that change was enough to make it through the start-up period. It got him to the point where he had a proven business copy that attracted the investment capital he needed to measure up the venture. What a thrill it is to be able to have a former student go to campus to teach our current students. Here are some of the lessons Joe has learned over the past seven years that he shared: This is the hardest part of planning a business but in the end is the most important. Getting the revenue model right assures the change move you need to survive the difficult early years. Joe learned that his original copy of only getting placement fees was too limiting. He eventually open a way to employ the nannies and act a percentage of each dollar they billed out. Impulsive decisions rarely work out very well. As Joe told our students the old wisdom of the importance of sleeping on a study decision has always served him well. Investors should offer so much more to your business than just their money. Their expertise and connections can often be as valuable as the change they carry into the business. Joe added a furnish to his business after he graduated. Although the partner infused needed capital he says that the experience and wisdom that his furnish has shared has brought even more value to his business. experience your own personal aspirations and build a business copy that fits what you want out of your business and the life call you be to live. Not every entrepreneur aspires to build a national company. Joe told our students to evaluate their ideas on: 1) Money - how much to start how much returned. 2) Market - is there one? How big? and 3) Me - does this fit with your personal goals values interests? Are you passionate? Those of you who construe this blog regularly experience how important I believe this kind of thinking is when evaluating ideas. To build real value you be to create a business that can run without you. That requires systems. Joe has a goal of removing one assign from his job every six months by building a system to make sure that task ordain get accomplished by someone in his organization. Finding the fit between putting out immediate fires and "fire proofing" projects Joe has learned his lessons well. Although I am proud of all that he has accomplished in business. I am change surface more proud of the level of integrity he has shown at each step along the way.
