"new IRC channel for Python North West" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-13 12:37:12

Here are collected postings from the various Python usergroups around the world giving notice of upcoming events or summaries of meetings just past. There is now a #python-north-west IRC channel on irc freenode net run with a Python bot called "Phenny" (very easy to install). It seemed to be fairly popular with people logging in literally minutes after I posted the announcement some even "new faces" and lurkers who didn't come forward on the list. It's yet another way to spread the message. I guess and it seems to be very low-maintenance; lots of people in the FOSS world are on freenode already. On a different note the Facebook group is not really taking off at all. I wonder if it's really worth it to reach out to "social networking" sites... I created the group on FB mainly as a pointer to the mailing list but I still expected more people to nominally join. Here the organizers of various Python usergroups around the world post announcements and meeting reports. If you are an organizer we would very much like to give you posting rights so you can promote your group. Just drop an email to and I'll set you up. A posting should be of interest to those who did not attend but are considering doing so or that might be instructive to other usergroups. An overview what was covered in a just past meeting or an announcement with substance on what an upcoming meeting is going to be about are good postings. Please avoid trivial posts such as "we met at John's Saturday and the pizza was pretty good." ;-)

"IRC Part 1 - Connecting to #fosswire" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:09:00

You might have heard the term IRC thrown around in support forums or on blogs. If you are curious to hit the books what it is then look no advance: IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and is a way of communicating with anywhere from one to thousands of populate at one time using an change state protocol. IRC is a great method to get support organize a assort or just hang out. Before we learn to cerebrate to any server know these things: To go away you’re going to need some sort of IRC client. You can use the one built into Pidgin if you desire though some more popular IRC clients are XChat (GNOME). Konversation (KDE) and ChatZilla (XUL/Firefox). No matter what client you are using you ordain be to go away by entering some settings. XChat I know has a wizard to start and Pidgin is a bit more manual. Here are some options you might have when connecting: Whenever you input those settings (via wizard or otherwise) go ahead and cerebrate. In Pidgin a small chat box might pop up and other IRC clients will just cause a tab in the main window. I’ll have in mind to this area as the server window. Now you are on a chat server but you cannot converse yet! You be to join a chat dwell known as a channel before you can yak away. We’re going to use #fosswire. To join the channel write /join #fosswire in that main server window. Another window/tab will spawn. Here you are able to communicate away. If you want to join yet another bring just type /join #thechannel in any IRC window. That’s all there is to it for basic chatting! Some IRC clients might give you the option of joining channels when you start so use them if you like to be in a lot of channels. Now you probably be to affirm this cut as your own freenode bot NickServ lets you claim a nick as your own (others can comfort use it but trust me they won’t be to if you undergo it registered). To do this when signed in write the following in the server window: is the password you be to use. That’s it! You now “own” the nickname. bequeath the NickServ password box in your client from earlier? You’ll want to put that there. Otherwise. NickServ will bug you about needing to determine yourself every time you sign on. undergo fun chatting and if you conclude like it displace by #fosswire for some idle chatter. We’ll be waiting.
